Thank you for your interest in the educational and research opportunities available within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Miami. Electrical and Computer Engineering are complimentary disciplines, which are at the forefront of the continuing development and evolution of our modern technological society. Electrical and computer engineers have initiated and contributed to the development of such important and diverse areas as integrated electronics and photonics, telecommunication systems and computer networks, computer hardware and software, image processing and computer vision, automation and robotics, electrical power generating and transmission systems, as well as participated in the development of significant applications to biotechnology. It is an exciting and challenging discipline offering a variety of rewarding career paths. We offer a number of innovative academic and research programs to help you achieve your career goals.

The department currently offers the following three undergraduate programs each leading to the Bachelor of Science degree:

• Electrical Engineering Program

        • Electrical Engineering Option
        • Audio Engineering Option
        • Wireless Communication Option

• Computer Engineering Program

Upon completion of their B.S., our students are in an ideal position to continue their Electrical and Computer Engineering studies in graduate school, enter a career in industry, or enter a professional school in law or medicine. Given the international renown of our faculty, our low student-to-faculty ratio combined with our excellent laboratory and classroom facilities, our department graduates are fully prepared for a variety of career paths.

In addition to the B.S. degree in either Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, the Department offers several integrated five-year programs leading to a dual B.S. and M.S. degree.

The Department also offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (M.S.E.C.E) and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.). Faculty research activities at the graduate level include: digital communications; source and channel coding; communication systems and networks; audio, image and video processing; image interpretation and computer vision; medical imaging and archiving; multimedia information systems and networks; distributed sensor and actuator networks; control and performance evaluation of computer communication networks; digital signal processing; audio, image and video coding; audio/speech enhancement; video and audio transmission over high-speed networks; photonic devices; optical data storage; optical fiber communication; wireless communication networks; data mining; multimedia information retrieval; digital libraries; data warehousing; and distributed and heterogeneous database systems.

I welcome you to explore the wide range of exciting educational and research opportunities offered by the Department and described in more detail elsewhere on this website. Should you decide on a career in Electrical and Computer Engineering, we hope that you will find an appropriate program among our offerings. We welcome inquiries if you have any questions or would like additional information.
